Learn from the best,
Surf for life
We offer the only private surf lessons from a Certified Master Surf Instructor (NSSIA) on California's central coast. Your experienced is totally personalized, so you'll get the safest, best, and most fun experience possible.
We are here because we are passionate about surfing and sharing the joy, peace, challenge, and beauty it brings to life.
We call it Mama Can Surf because we specialize in teaching women to surf, but that isn't all we teach. We teach all ages, sizes, genders, and abilities, from kids to grandparents, exceptional athletes to those with extra challenges. Remember: your lesson is yours, so it fits you.
Mama Can Surf is based in Atascadero, CA, but serves all of San Luis Obispo County and the central coast; surf lessons are available for Pismo Beach, Avila Beach, Morro Bay, Cayucos, and Cambria. Private lessons available in other locations by special arrangement - just ask.
Mama Can Surf was founded by Sada Andrews, who believes the waves have something to offer everyone. She is the Lead Instructor for lessons and is a NSSIA Certified Master Instructor. Sada has been surfing for over 30 years and founded MCS shortly after the birth of her first child. She noticed that surfing helped her reclaim her identity as an interesting, fun, and strong woman — much more than a mom — and hoped to share that joy with other women. The mission soon expanded to include anyone who is looking for an introduction to surfing in an encouraging, fun, non-judgmental, and healthy environment.
Our Story
As the mother and sister of individuals with physical disabilities, Sada wants to make surf lessons available for people with physical limitations or other disabilities, including neurodivergent individuals. Kids and adults with ADHD/AuDHD/Autism learn in different ways the require personalized strategies and goals. Sada has volunteered at Project Surf Camp, introducing children with special needs to surfing, and has run surf camps for Wounded Warriors.
If you want to surf but think you can’t, this is the place for you.
When necessary for individuals or groups, Assistant Instructors will help lesson participants both in and out of the water. Our goal is to keep you safe and have fun, so our instructors are carefully chosen for their surf experience, maturity, and commitment to safety (all are certified in CPR/First Aid).
Wondering if this will work for you? Just ask.
We’ve been bringing down barriers to surfing for over 15 years. The waves are for everyone, and we want you to get out there safely.
